(1 Corinthians 1:18) Did you know, the preaching of the cross is never mentioned in the New Testament, except in Paul’s letters to the churches? Never, in the book of Acts was it written that the apostles preached “the cross” to the sinner...They preached ”Jesus and the resurrection”. Certainly, the apostles proclaimed the truth that Jesus was crucified on the cross for our sins and rose again, but that which Paul refers to as the Message of the cross should not be confused with the simple historical account of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. To tell the sinner that Jesus died on the cross for us and rose again to give us eternal life is vitally important. But for the believer, there is much more to the message of the cross... read more»Praising Him for His GoodnessJanuary 2, 2005 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! Psalm 107:8 There’s nothing like meditating on the goodness of God that stirs up the joy in me, and moves me to praise Him with every fiber of my being. On the other hand, nothing much saddens me more than the attitude of many Christians, who seem to have no joy whatsoever. Many seem to be not only depressed much of the time, but deeply ensnared in bitterness and despair. read more»JESUS — Lord and GodRecognizing the DEITY of Jesus ChristJuly 19, 2004 The doctrine of the Trinity has long been a subject of controversy and debate. Until recently however, there has not been much of that debate taking place within mainline Christianity. We have always known the non-Christian cults, such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, did not accept the doctrine of the Trinity, but I have been surprised recently to find myself in conversation with members (and even pastors) of churches who say they are full gospel, evangelical, and even one who claimed to be “Word of Faith”, who are non-Trinitarian. read more»Hell’s Best Kept Secret?A Fresh Look at the Ministry of Righteousness vs. CondemnationJune 14, 2004 An old doctrine has resurfaced in recent years and become very popular, especially in many American evangelical circles, which says that unless the Ten Commandments (the Law) is preached to the sinner, he cannot come to the necessary understanding of his need for a Savior. This method of first preaching the Law of God to the sinner, then making the determination, as to whether that sinner is truly sorry for his sins, before presenting the gospel to him; has been referred to as “hell’s best kept secret” (concerning effective evangelism)... But is it biblical? read more»Got Victory?May 22, 2004 Now thanks be to God, who through our union with Christ, leads us in one continual triumph and uses us to spread the sweet savor of the knowledge of Him in everyplace... (2 Cor. 2:14 TCNT) With even a cursory study of the New Testament, there should remain no doubt within the Christian’s mind, that God’s plan for his or her life is nothing less than a steady stream of victory. Yet, if you were to ask a large number of Christians how they are getting along, I doubt if a significant percentage would describe their lives as did the apostle Paul --- ‘one continual triumph’. Usually, it’s more like, “Well, I'm getting by, I suppose.” You might even get an earful of woes and troubles, followed at best by a feeble, “Praise the Lord anyhow”. read more»Without ExcuseMay 20, 2004 A few years ago, a member of the church I was pastoring, approached me with the following question: “Isn't it true, that people who have never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ, would still be saved and go to heaven, because they would never have had the opportunity to reject Christ. . . And isn't 'rejection of Christ' the only sin that condemns someone to hell”? I was a little surprised, and it motivated me to do a series of teaching on basic Bible doctrine. It didn't take very long to discover there were others who were also unlearned in some of the most basic truths. read more» |
